Well, here I am again!

Yeah, I know. The building from my painting looks darker than the pic I took. I arrived around 8:30 this morning at Cefe Spoonaz. At that time, this place looked simply splitted in two as light and shadow. But, as the painting progressed, the sun rose up higher and the whole scenery changed. Of course, I mean their colors. Usually I finish a plein air within two  hours but it took me almost three hours this morning. Guess, I’ll have to go back there and do it again. This time, I’ll have to simplify the scenary with big pieces of colors since the light changes so quickly.

I bought a bottle of water from Spoonaz Cafe and settled myself by the deck. I have to say that this is the most comfortable place to do my plein air. The deck was all mine and the umbrella above my head kept me cool.
I like this place ao much. I think I’ll do it again tomorrow!

I think the following pic with boats looks better . Well, it looks busier is for sure.
In order to finish earlier, I ignored those clouds on purpose. And it also makes the buildings popped out because I simplified the sky. It’s the forth time that i painted here and I’m still not quite satisfied about the result. I should go back and try one more time with boats again. Oh! My! I missed a red car! I thought I had it painted in read!

I haven't posted anything for awhile. Now, I'm at my parent's mountain house at Yiangmingsan, Taipei, Taiwan 8am. Beautiful scenery with perfect light always inspires me.

Art activity in Mérida

Since early 2017, I became member of El Caimito, a fine art gallery located at Mérida, México. Jose Luis Rumbo is the manager and artist himself. He organises groupes and solos exhibition for his artists. The following paintings of mine are part of group display at a hotel in Mérida.

A Call for Artists exhibition #2

Pet portrait Fluffy

This is my third pet portrait that I work with pictures. For specifically only working with pictures, I suffer enormously because I can't feel life itself. I usually work directly with my subjects, for example, models, still life, flowers and landscapes. Idealy, I have to feel my subjects while I'm working with them. 

I still remember at the first year of the art school where I attened, they once asked us to copy a black and white picture of a glass of a drink with a cube of ice in it. The purpose was to practice the value of these colors. Then as far as I remembered, in order to study sea and cloud, I did a series of copies of the paintings from Baroque era old master years ago. To me, learning from great masters is a great way to improve.

I'm not against working with pictures. I have artist friends who work exclusively only with pictures and the result is quite pleasant. But I'm not a big fan who loves to work with them. There's time I almost quit. But guess, once I set a goal, I should execute it properly no matter what.

At the end of our session today, I asked my model to sit back to his chair because I wanted to take a picture of him with the bust. When I lifted up my head, I saw this...." a man in white with a pair of dark sun glasses". 😲Immediately, he made me think about the movie, " The man in Black". Oh.... I couldn't stop laughing!!! 😂 It was a good treat after almost four hours of hard working. I should've asked Zamil " chin down" again while taking his picture. They are the most used words during my sessions with my models!!! And, for a very long time, I believe Zamil will not forget about these words even after we finished the bust. And..... I told him that the reason why this bust takes so long its because the shape of his head changes everyday!!!  So much work.  There are times i almost lost my patience. Thank you, Zamil for hanging on for this bust.  😊

Pet portrait by commission

More than a month ago, i brought my dog, Fluffy to visit the veterinarian. Well, the vet who's also my friend asked me that it'd been nice if i could do pet portraits by commission. After two weeks, I've my flyers out. And I just shipped my first commissioned painting " Buddy" to my client. My client received the painting and told me that she's totally in love with it.  Guess I'll keep painting  pets. Please let me if you're interested

A friend of mine who owns a turist company, " Belize Concierge" sends me on a trip of " Blue Hole Cessna Air Charter " from Belize City. I take pictures of our beautiful sea from above the sky. So beautiful, almost takes my breathe away!!! This oil painting and the following water colors are inspired by this gorgeous sea. I work with the pictures I took from this trip.

Group exhibition in Merida, Mexico

Along with fellow belizean artists, I have three works showing at the Museum of Belize. The exhibition starts from this Monday and lasts for a month. ( a blaster cast bust Cisneros, an oilportrait Grandmom Janine and a seascape Green Sea.

I usually complete a life size clay bust in four to six weeks and add at least one more week for molding and casting. Now, I've been working on this clay bust for almost seven weeks and it's not even close to finish. I think it'll need two more weeks. I've set a goal that I'll have seven plaster cast busts by the end of November. Now, probably I'll have to extent the deadline to December. I think one of the reasons why I'm taking longer is because my recent model is taller and his shoulder is four centimeters wider than my previous model.

( Plein air) Haulover River in the Afternoon

"Haulover river in the afternoon"!
Yes, this will be the name of this plein air painting. With my two dear friends, we went to Haulover River fishing this afternoon. Of course, I brought my plein air equipment. The scenery was beautiful. There were hundreds, thousands of green colors intersecting with sky blue. And, the tiny sparkles from the water surface and the sky holes were dancing with the hot moist air. Yes, it was hot but greatfully, there were breezes. I felt like i was painting in heaven. I hope I didn't exaggerate too much because i was painting while drinking a cool nice beer. It certainty was a wonderful experience.

(Plein air) Poetry night

Lately, I've been working with my models in my studio. I do miss the smell of oil paint, thinner, and the open air of outdoor painting. With that in my mind, I went to a poetry gathering with my plein air equipment tonight. It took me about one and half an hours to have this oil sketch done. All I needed to do was to breathe and focus. I miss plein air painting and can't wait to go back to its routine once I've completed six busts by the end of this year.

The reason why I wanted to have my model's eyes opened especially for this bust is because I saw a piercing gaze that I dont usually see from the people I work with. With flickers in his eyes, they stared into the distance. To me, those eyes seemed contemplating into their own thoughts and time freezed. But, later, I began to notice there's a pair of soft warm eyes surfacing from my model's face. I would describ the two different gazes with colors such as light blue and light orange. The mood of tempture of my model has changed. Very interesting. There are two more weeks to go with this bust. I can't wait to see when it's completed.
