(Plein Air) Boats at Rest

Plein air painting
Oil on board.   8.5 in x 9.6 in (27 x 22cm)

Hot as usual! This mirning I began to work from quarter to eight and I had to stop at quarter past nine. I think it was not only because the heat. The whole image looks very busy already. For that reason, I had to stop too. Tomorrow, one more day to paint this harbour with different angle!

Studio work of Areca Palm Trees at Noon

Studio Work
Oil on canvas.  60 x 80cm

It looks fine to me now. I hope I won't change my mind and add more details. Of course, this studio work is based on my plein air painting I did early this year. Its also called "Areca Palm Tress at Noon" that I painted at the Princess Hotel in Belize City. I still remember that afternoon. It was very pleasant because I worked under the shades and there's breeze from the sea too.

Sketched at orchestra practice

Oil on board.   10 in x 7 in (25.5 x 17.5cm)
Sketched at the practice of YOB Orchestra

I did it last Saturday afternoon when my girls' orchestra were practicing. I was not very pleased with this sketch but I still wanted to leave a record of it. I was trying to capture the light but I failed in a way. I'm not sure but I think maybe it's its color that troubled me. I didn't like too much its tone and its value wasn't right either but the music was great. I believe the next one will be better. We'll see.

I did them almost 2 weeks ago. I forgot completely to upload them.

White House by the Sea

Plein air painting
Oil on board.   10 in x 7 in (25.5 x 17.5cm)

Well, this morning, I was supposed to paint the boat yard but I didn't see what I wanted when I arrived there. Yes. I had to say that I felt a bit disappointed. Then I remembered I saw this house standing alone by the sea side last week. I like its variety of white colors. VoilĂ ! Here it is.

Construction site

Plein air painting
Oil on board.   8.5 in x 9.6 in (27 x 22cm)

I didn't feel very comfortable doing this piece this morning. Why? I wish I know exactly what went wrong so I can fix it. I remember that I painted something similar early this year and it too, it didn't please me much. First I think it's the composition that troubles me and I focused on too much details. It is supposed to be painted with bold colors like sketch. Or, because I had not much feeling about it? Possible.

Studio Work " Smoky Mountain"

Studio work
Oil on canvas.   60 cm x 80cm

This studio work took me three afternoons to finally call it an end. It is based on the plein air painting " Smoky Yiang-Ming Mountain" I did back in Taiwan. I like its contrast of layout. Half and half, shadow and light.

" I thought there's a storm coming!"

Plein air painting
Oil on board.   8.5 in x 9.6 in (27 x 22cm)

Ya, I thought there's a storm coming while I was working on this piece this morning. No lightening but non stop thunder made me feel a little anxious since I left my umbrella home. And then, time went by, I began to feel the fierce power of sun. I would have spent more time working on this painting but you won't believe how hot the sun was. It was burning! Maybe it could even cook an egg on my lap!( I sit on a bench next to the sea) I still remember when I was doing the plein air of " the Morning Sun" right at this place. I had the same sensation to this almighty Apollo God!

Mangroves on a raining day

Plein air painting
Oil on board.    8.5 in x 9.6 in (27 x 22cm)

Not long after I began to paint, the rain pured down with wind. I was working with one hand holding an umbrella, one hand with a brush. There was a moment I wanted to quit because canvas, pallete and half of my back were soaked with water. At that moment, I was thinking what did I gain if I returned home. Well, I wouldn't gained anything. I only lost a chance to produce another plein air work. I shouldn't care if it came out nice or not. It's all about the process that fascinates me and very often, the result is magic!

Riverside's Mangroves

Oil on board
8.5 in x 9.6 in (27cm x 22cm)
River side's mangroves are always my favorite subject to paint. This is the first plein air paining I did after returned from Taiwan. I didn't have much patience this morning. After one and half an hour I decided to finish my work. I should have spent another half an hour to fix the sky line and the trees line. I'll try to paint a serie of them. Maybe couples of them will come out nice! I really like them.

Studio work Silent Night on Mountain

Studio work
Oil on canvas
60 x 80cm
This studio work is based on the plein air (shown as the following picture) I did on the mountain in Taiwan. There's supposed to have a bridge in the middle of the painting but I choose to ignore it. Its not necessary for this work. It's all about the mood!

Sketches of Jazz at Radisson Hotel

3.5 in x 5 in (8.9 x 12.7cm)
Pen on paper
This is one of my favorite sketches I did last night. There's Jazz festival in Belize every year. Musicians from different countries come to play wonderful jazz. Last night, I went to one of the concerts at the Fort George Radisson Hotel by the swimming pool. I especially love the group from Illinois. They made me think about my old friends back to Barcelona time! Oh! How I miss them!

Sketche at practice of Youth Orchestra of Belize

3.5 in x 5 in (8.9 x 12.7cm)
Pen on Paper
Come back home for almost a week. I do miss my dog, my cat, my bed but mostly I miss my studio. Lately, I've been preparing painting frames for my up coming 3 person show at the Mexican Institute in Belize City on this October. I've custom made those wooden frames. I just need to sand them well and paint each of them with right color to fit each painting. Its been four days and i still can't make up my mind for the frame color of the last two paintings. It's amazing how the color of painting frame changes the whole aspect of painting itself. Yes. It is delicate.
Well, I was able to do couples of sketches at my daughters' orchestra practice on Saturday afternoon. Felt great to see every single one of them trying to do his and her best. Like a rolling g stone, isn't this force that we're trying to do in our lives too? I'm grateful to come back to Belize. This is my home, my battle field now!
