Head Statue Maria day 9 in progress

Oil based clay
Life size head statue.

I dont remember how many hours my model and I have been working on it. But i do remember we did four hours today. I believe I've wasted half of the times going back and forth correcting it for nothing. If I should find an excuse for myself, i would tell you its because i haven't done any head statue for so long and i need a little time to catch up. It probably felt like doing my hundred portraits studies two years ago within 6 or 7 months. I certainly work better and more efficiency after so much practices now. It will be the same plan for the head statue but i know that i won't be able to do a series of hundred pieces in a short time. The process takes much longer to finish a head statue than paint a portrait. In the end, I'll need to make a mold of the sculpture and cast it on plaster or fiberglass.

I did this quick study this morning. Im not quiet happy about its value but i love its red orange. Sweet like candy! With a little assistance i made this colorful glass cup a few years ago when i went back to Taiwan. It's magic how a piece of glass turned into a splendid art work! 😊

Head Statue Maria Day 5 in progress

Oil based clay head statue with life size
Day 5 (3 hours)
(Click the pic to get a better resolution image)

Now i regret that i didn't study anatomy seriously when i was younger. I think that's the main reason why this head statute takes me so long. And, this is just a head connected to a neck with a part of the shoulder, chest. 😥 Despite all those frustrations, I am glad that i was able to make a small progress after 3 straight working hours with my model today. I reminded myself that I had to be patient. Just be patient and keep working. 😊

(Still life) Gloomy Bowl

Both of my head statue and nude study models couldn't made it today. So I did a still life in the morning and another in the afternoon. This one is the later one. I felt like doing meditation while i was working on them. Although i listened to loude music but I let myself sink into silence. I had to concentrate on analyzing the  values because i easily got carried away with the the colors. There's a moment i wanted to stop but i kept going. That's the reason why this still life seems a little overworked. Ayee.... I feel like I'm never happy with my work. But, i do like its gloomy air. 😆

Head Statue Maria in progress

Oil based clay
Day 4 (4 hours)
(Click the pic to get a better resolution image)

I haven't worked with oil based clay for more than 20 years. That's a long time! The last time i did was when i was living in Paris, France about 23 years ago. As I remember, I lost all the statues i did when i moved back to Taiwan. It feels a bit sad that I don't even have a single photo of them. Yes, they are like lost childrend of mine and i was an irresponsible parent back to that time. 😂 Well, it's never too late to do something you love. This head statue is not finushed yet. But, voilá, here is the first oil based clay head statue I'm working on after those years! Probably i need about 10 working hours to complete it. I cross my fingers and hope to make significant progress everyday.

Day 3 ( 4 hours)
I reset my mind and observed carefully before i began to work. It was a good day work.

Day 2 (3 hours)
I had to undo completely the work I did on the previous day because the whole head was totally wrong. I worked for 3 hours only trying to build the basic form. Pschycoligically, i was so tired.

Day 1 (4 hours)
I worked too fast and forgot to observe carefully the structure of the head of my model before i got into the details. Mistakes.

Maria, my daughter's violin teacher is my model. Im glad she poses for me because she can stay still for hours.

After three and half an hours of standing working on this study, i was exhausted. Yes, very exhausted but somehow I loved this sensation of being worked until I couldn't even think. Is it called "self-torture"?😱 Guess, that's one of the reasons why i love swimming too. I usually do 45 minutes to an hour of nonstop free style. The result is similar to my painting work. Both psychologically and physically challenging.

Instead of cold white light, I used warm orange light this morning for the study. It made my model's skin looked red and vibrant. It showed higher temperature and i was able to compare these values and colors themselves. It was very interesting to me. There was supposed to have a green reflection on one of the model's thigh. It was a beautiful reflection from the green scalf. I told myself that i had to capture it but i totally forgot about it since im looking at the picture of the study now. I'll try on tomorrow's and see if im willing to paint it on the canvas.

This was actually the second pose i painted this morning. The first pose took me almost two hours and i ended up scrapted it away. I told myself that today wasn't a good day. But somehow i just couldn't let go... I saw a great pose with nice shadow while my model was taking a break. Ah.... That was the pose i needed!!! So,  this is the study for a nice day today!!!! 😊
